Donovan Lowe’s musical background goes back to the earliest years of his life. Being a member of choirs and ensembles paved the way to him writing music in his teenage years. The struggles he went through at this time became the driving force for his lyrics, and arguably the catalyst for his success so far. He was an attendee of Musicians Institute, where he initially picked up his performance and production techniques. He later graduated from Los Medanos College with a degree in Music.

Donovan’s debut EP, ‘Loving U in Secret’ captures that unique ‘sadboi’ vibe and echoes similarities to 6lack, Frank Ocean and The Weeknd. The project features the fan favorites, “Colors”, “Feel the Same”, “The Fall” and “Passion”. His latest single, “Tonight, It’s Going Down” finds Lowe and collaborator, Somber Moon, looking over their shoulders for the Halloween season.

Where are you based?
I am currently based in Pittsburg, California.

How long have you been making music?
I’ve been writing music since 2007, but I’ve been actively releasing music since 2015.

What genre would you consider your music to be?
My musical genre is mainly R&B and Pop.

What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
When I was a kid, I got to artists like Michael Jackson, Destiny’s Child, Usher, Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey and many more soar to the top and live out the dream that I wanted to live as well. The vocals, performances, music videos, the showmanship, everything! Watching Destiny’s Child make their debut and kill their performances every time throughout their career was so inspiring to me.

What are your biggest musical influences?
I’m an R&B lover always and forever. I listen to a lot of R&B, pop, gospel, some hip hop and rock. Some country. Beyoncé and Usher having such a huge influence on my music and performance style. One of the things Beyoncé does with her music that I appreciate, in addition to pushing the envelope and raising the standard, is the inclusion of storytelling. Lemonade and Black Is King are great examples of this.

Are you signed to a label or are you an independent artist?
I am an independent artist.

What have been the biggest challenges in your music career?
Lately, my biggest challenge has been picking the guest artist for my next single. Also, moving into more of a production role when collaborating. Currently looking for more artists to work with in that light as well. I have one so far.

How many songs or albums have you released to date?
To date, I have released 17 songs in total (including an EP) and have been featured on three additional songs so far.

Can you tell us a few things about your latest release?
My latest release is actually a collaboration I did with Philly rapper, LeemyHendrix. A song I wrote called “Toxic AF Love” which talks about the struggles of letting go of someone who has constantly mistreated you and, although they are aware of what they’ve done, their actions show that they did not care about you enough to change. You finally find the strength to leave that person with the hope that someone better for you is out there.

Any plans for new music or upcoming projects we should know about?
I have new music coming out very, very soon. I’ve had a lot of fun writing and collaborating with other artists for their own projects, but the time is here for me to get back to more solo music. A lot of the new material will be produced by me and there may even be some surprise guest features with that as well (shhhh lol) but I’m excited to share all of this with my fans real soon. So, thank you to everyone supporting and stay tuned!
