COLOURMIND RELEASE NEW SINGLE & VIDEO
‘SWEET SURRENDER’
The seeds of the song come from guitarist Jonny Essiech’s young years, practicing guitar at home until his fingers bled, pondering the teenage scrapes he was getting himself into. The resultant guitar riff then lay dormant for over a decade until the older/wiser Jonny decided to see what it sounded like on a bass guitar and discovered that the old riff had plenty of new life just waiting inside it.
“I chucked some chords over it and just started getting lost,” he says. “I began writing lyrics straight away and having all these memories from back when I was a teenager when I wrote the riff. All the lyrics were around insecurity with my girlfriends at the time. Who knows how to hold a stable relationship when you’re 16 years old?”
The nascent Sweet Surrender then went on a home demo journey between band members, as each found a way to add their own strengths and finesse to the song.
“I thought it was a killer song,” says drummer, Matt Wenke. “I loved the riff and could just really get a feel for it. I felt like I knew what I wanted to do with the song, so we changed up some parts here and there until we could get a proper feel for it and it all clashed together really well. To get it to where it is now feels like a massive accomplishment.”
At the time ColourMind were in the process of finding a new vocalist and when prospective singer, Jimmy Watson, offered to demo a vocal and subsequently nailed the take, the band not only had its first single ready to roll, but a new frontman to boot.
“I started getting Millencolin vibes,” Jonny says, “and I thought, ‘this is exactly what we need’.”
A great single requires an excellent video, so ColourMind engaged the services of acclaimed director Pete Renzullo of Scudley Films. The video evokes the song’s themes about ‘growing up, insecurities, reconciliation, social media and not listening to what other people say about your relationship’ with dynamic gig footage filmed before a live (and pumping) audience on the soundstage at Vision Rehearsal Studios in East Victoria Park.
How sweet it is.
